Questions and answers about tension curtain rods
This is where we collect the questions that come up most often before and after buying a tension rod. Every answer starts with the essentials in a few sentences; details and sources follow right below.
All questions at a glance
- Can a tension rod hold a shower curtain and a liner?Yes, a tension shower rod is made to carry a curtain and a liner. There is no standard load capacity, though: Bob Vila reports makers' ratings of 7, 22 and 30 lb for three shower rods, and Moen states none. Weigh your curtain, liner and hooks, allow for water, stay below any stated rating, and hang no towels on the rod.
- What can you use instead of a tension rod?Pick by the problem. Outside the window frame without drilling: brackets that tap into the top of the trim, such as Kwik-Hang, which states up to 20 lb. No second wall: a floor-to-ceiling frame such as Umbra's Anywhere. Long spans or heavy panels: a bracket-mounted rod or a center support. Shower rod that keeps slipping: a screw-mounted rod.
- Can you use a shower tension rod for window curtains?Yes, if the window is an inside mount and its width falls inside the rod's range. Shower rods usually start wider than window rods; Moen's TR1000 covers 44 to 72 inches. Check that the jambs are deep enough for the end flanges, 2½ inches across on the Moen, and that rings or the rod pocket fit a 1-inch tube. It cannot go outside the frame.
- Do tension rods damage walls? They can, depending on the surface. A tension rod drills no holes, but its end caps press hard on two small spots. Fresh paint, drywall, vinyl and MDF trim can show marks; cured paint on a solid jamb and glazed tile usually cope better. No maker data or test exists. Let paint cure first, set the caps on flat spots and use only as much force as the rod needs.
- Can you use a tension rod outside the window frame? No, not on the flat wall around a window: a tension rod needs two opposing surfaces to press against, so it can only be mounted inside an opening. The exception is a window set in a recess or alcove whose side walls reach past the frame. Otherwise use brackets – no-drill ones that tap into wooden trim, such as Kwik-Hang's, or drilled brackets.
How much weight can a tension rod hold?
How much a tension rod can carry has no single answer. There is no standard load capacity; some makers state a figure for one model, others state none. The page below lists what each maker actually says and what that means for curtains, liners and shelves.
Before you buy and after you hang
Most questions come down to two things: the inside width of the opening and the surface the end caps press against. If you have not measured yet, start with tension rod sizes. If a rod already hangs and drops, slips or will not tighten, why a tension rod keeps falling goes through the causes one by one. Terms such as end cap, pin lock or sag are explained in the glossary.
