Question & answer

Can you use a tension rod outside the window frame?

Not on a flat wall. A tension rod holds only by pressing its end caps against two opposing surfaces, and the wall around a window offers none. It works “outside the frame” only where side walls continue past the window, for example in a recess or alcove; then it is still mounted inside an opening, just a wider one. For a curtain above and beside the frame you need brackets.

The short answer

No, not on the flat wall around a window: a tension rod needs two opposing surfaces to press against, so it can only be mounted inside an opening. The exception is a window set in a recess or alcove whose side walls reach past the frame. Otherwise use brackets – no-drill ones that tap into wooden trim, such as Kwik-Hang's, or drilled brackets.

Why the flat wall does not work

A tension rod is an adjustable rod without brackets. A spring or a twist mechanism presses its rubber end caps outward, and friction at the caps carries the curtain. That force needs a counterpart: two surfaces that face each other, such as the two side jambs of a window. The wall around a window is one flat plane. There is nothing for the caps to press against, so a tension rod can only be mounted inside an opening, never on a flat wall or outside the frame.

The trim does not change this. Window casing is flat on its face; even a deep casing gives the caps nothing that faces the opposite side.

The one exception: a wider opening

“Outside the frame” works when the window sits inside a larger opening. Typical cases:

SituationTension rod outside the frame? What to measure
Window in a deep recess or alcove, side walls reach past the frameYes, wall to wall across the recessRecess width at rod height
Window between two built-in cabinets or shelvesYes, if both sides are solid and parallelGap between the two sides
Dormer window with side wallsYes, between the dormer wallsWidth at the height of the rod
Window on a flat wall, trim onlyNo–
Corner window, one side openNo–

In each “yes” case the rod is still mounted inside an opening; the opening is simply the recess instead of the window. The usual rules apply: the measured width must fall inside the printed range, measured at top, middle and bottom with the smallest figure used, and wide spans sag. ALLZONE, for example, sells its window tension rods in ranges up to 160 inches. Our guide to tension rod sizes shows how to measure, and tension rods for windows covers frame depth and the inside-mount case.

What works outside the frame instead

No-drill trim brackets. Kwik-Hang's brackets are pressed or tapped into the top corner of the window casing and hold an ordinary curtain rod above and outside the frame. Kwik-Hang says they are designed for traditional wooden trim of ½ to 1 inch width, are not recommended for PVC, MDF, metal trim, crown molding or hardwoods such as oak, and hold up to 20 lb. Our comparison of no-drill curtain rods sets them against tension rods point by point.

Floor-to-ceiling frames. Where neither side walls nor suitable trim exist, the tension principle can work vertically. Umbra lists its Anywhere rod at 36 to 66 inches wide and 7 to 10 feet high, with a maximum capacity of 15 lb. ALLZONE lists an AZ15 room divider rod for heights of 63 to 130 inches.

Drilled brackets. For heavy panels or a window without wooden trim, a rod on screwed brackets is the reliable answer. Fix them into studs or with the anchors the bracket maker specifies.

More options, sorted by the reason a tension rod fails, are in what to use instead of a tension rod. If your window has vinyl frames, check the frame-material notes in tension rods for windows before you fit a rod inside it.

Questions people ask

Can a tension rod go above the window frame?

Only if something solid sits on both sides at that height, such as the side walls of a window recess or two cabinets flanking the window. On an ordinary flat wall above the window there is nothing for the end caps to press against, so the rod cannot hold. Brackets on the trim or in the wall are the way to hang a curtain there.

How do I hang curtains outside the window frame without drilling?

With brackets that tap into the top of the wooden window trim. Kwik-Hang, for example, says its brackets need wooden trim of ½ to 1 inch width, are not recommended for PVC, MDF or metal trim, and hold up to 20 lb. Where there is no trim and no second wall, a floor-to-ceiling tension frame is the other no-drill option.

Can I put a tension rod between the window trim on the outside?

Usually not. The trim around a window is flat on the face; it offers no surfaces that face each other. A tension rod needs its two end caps pressing toward each other's opposite surface, which only the inside of the opening, or the side walls of a recess, provide.
