Curved tension shower rods: elbow room without drilling, and the narrow width range
A curved tension shower rod bows outward over the tub, so the curtain hangs further from you, and it holds by pressing against the two alcove walls – no drilling. The catch is fit: Moen's curved tension rod fits 57 to 60 inches only, Zenna Home's 50 to 72 inches. Our pick for most tub alcoves is the Zenna Home aluminum rod.

The short version
Measure wall to wall at rod height. If the alcove is 50 to 72 inches, our pick is the Zenna Home curved tension rod in aluminum. If it is exactly 57 to 60 inches and you want a Moen finish, the Moen CSR2172 fits. The difference between curved and straight rods is fit, not security: no source shows curved rods holding worse.

Our pick for curved showers
Zenna Home
Zenna Home curved 50–72 in
An aluminum curved shower rod that holds by tension across the usual 50 to 72 inches of a tub alcove.
Why here: Zenna Home documents a 50 to 72 inch range for its curved tension rods – the widest fit window of any curved rod with a maker page we found.
Best for: Standard tub alcoves where you want more elbow room without drilling
- Adjusts from 50 to 72 inches – a far wider window than Moen’s 57–60 in curved rod
- Aluminum: the NeverRust warranty promises no red rust for the original purchaser’s lifetime
- The curve moves the curtain away from you in the tub
- “Never rust” covers red rust only – not white oxidation, pitting or steel screws and springs
- No load rating published
- A curved rod has more parts to fit than a straight one; plan two people for installation
- Width range
- 50–72 in

Zenna Home lists its curved tension rods as adjustable from 50 to 72 inches. That range covers most tub alcoves without forcing you to hit an exact width. The rod is aluminum, and Zenna's NeverRust warranty, as quoted by retailers, promises that the rod stays free from red rust for the original purchaser's lifetime. The scope matters: it does not cover white oxidation, pitting or the steel screws and springs. Zenna states no load rating. If you are unsure whether you want a curve at all, start with the tension shower curtain rod guide.

Why a curved tension rod needs a near-exact width
Straight tension shower rods are often sold with ranges of several feet: the straight rods in our shower rod comparison cover 32 to 80 or 42 to 73 inches. Curved tension rods come with much smaller ranges. Moen's CSR2172 shows this clearly: Moen gives its dimensions as 57 to 60 inches, a 3-inch window. Zenna Home's curved tension rods cover 50 to 72 inches.
That is the decisive difference between curved and straight tension rods. You will read that curved rods are less safe because of the extra leverage of the bow; we found no source that measured this. Both kinds press their end flanges against the walls, and friction carries the curtain. What does fail more easily is the fit: a curved rod bought for the wrong width either does not reach or cannot be compressed.
Tension rod sizes explains measuring in more detail, including for straight rods.
The models one by one
Zenna Home curved tension rod, aluminum
The widest fit window among the curved rods with a maker page: 50 to 72 inches. Zenna's own site lists the tension curved rods in chrome, bronze and brushed nickel, with “Rustproof” in the product titles; the NeverRust warranty wording comes from retailers. Zenna also sells a double-curved tension version for the same range and a permanent-mount curved rod for 44 to 72 inches if you would rather screw it in. Plan two people for installation: the bow has to sit level while you set the tension.
Speaks for it
- 50–72 in range covers most tub alcoves
- Aluminum: no red rust under the NeverRust warranty
- Double-curved and permanent-mount versions in the same line
Speaks against it
- Warranty covers red rust only
- No load rating published
- More parts to align than a straight rod
Moen CSR2172: exact fit for 57 to 60 inches
Moen makes this curved tension rod for one alcove size: 57 to 60 inches wall to wall. Inside that window it is a strong choice. Moen says the rod installs without tools, needs no cutting, is corrosion resistant, and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Moen's spec sheet gives a 1-inch rod of type 304 stainless steel for chrome and brushed nickel; a load rating is not stated. On 22 October 2026 the chrome version was listed as sold out in Moen's own shop, while the Amazon listing was available; check availability again before you order.

Moen CSR2172 curved tension rod in brushed nickel*Zenna Home matte black, tension or screw mount
This listing offers a matte-black curved rod that, according to its title, can be tension-mounted or screwed in, for 50 to 72 inches. Zenna's own curved-rod page does not list this black dual-mount model, so its data comes from the listing only. Useful if you have black fixtures or want the option to screw it in later.
Rubbermaid curved rod, matte black
A matte-black curved tension rod sold under the Rubbermaid name for 50 to 72 inches, with no drilling per the listing. It is a young listing, and we read no manufacturer page for it. It is the second black option next to the Zenna listing.

Buying criteria for a curved tension rod
| Criterion | What to check |
|---|---|
| Width | Your measured width inside the stated range – this matters more on a curved rod than on any other |
| Material | Aluminum cannot form red rust; steel parts can. A named finish says nothing about the core |
| Curtain | A curved rod is longer along its arc than the straight distance, so the curtain must be wide enough |
| Mount | Pure tension, or tension plus screws for a permanent install |
| Load | No maker of the rods here states one; a curtain plus a wet liner is the realistic load |
There is no standard load capacity for tension rods. Bob Vila reports the makers' own ratings for three shower rods as 7, 22 and 30 lb, none of them curved models. More context in how much weight a tension rod can hold.
Typical mistakes
- Buying by tub length instead of measured width. Do not assume a 5-foot tub alcove falls inside 57 to 60 inches – measure it.
- Setting a flange on a grout line. Move it to a flat tile face; a cap that sits half on grout is where slipping starts. See why tension rods keep falling.
- Hanging towels on the bow. The bow sits within reach, which makes it tempting, but it adds wet weight no maker rates.
Rod finder
Question 1 of 4
Where does the rod go?
A tension rod needs two solid, opposing surfaces.
Bottom line
For most tub alcoves between 50 and 72 inches we recommend the Zenna Home curved tension rod: the widest documented fit, aluminum, and a red-rust warranty with a clear scope. If your alcove measures exactly 57 to 60 inches and you want Moen's warranty and finishes, the CSR2172 fits that width and nothing else. For a straight rod instead, see the best tension shower curtain rods.
Questions people ask
Are curved tension shower rods as secure as straight ones?
No source we found shows a difference in hold. Both press rubber end caps against the walls, and friction carries the curtain. The real difference is fit: curved tension rods are sold for a narrower width window, such as 57 to 60 inches for Moen's CSR2172 and 50 to 72 inches for Zenna Home's curved rods. Mount the flanges on flat tile.
Do curved shower rods need special curtains?
Usually not, but a curved rod is longer along its arc than the straight distance between the walls, so the curtain has to cover more length. A standard-width curtain that barely covers a straight rod may leave gaps on a curved one. Check the curtain width against the alcove before you buy.
Can a curved shower rod be installed without drilling?
Yes, a curved tension rod holds by pressure against the two walls. Moen says its CSR2172 installs without tools, and Zenna Home lists its curved tension rods as adjustable from 50 to 72 inches. Some curved rods are sold for either tension or screw mounting; Zenna also makes a permanent-mount curved rod that is screwed in.
What size curved tension rod do I need?
Measure the alcove wall to wall at the height where the rod will sit, at the front edge of the tub, and use the smaller figure if the walls are not parallel. The measured width must fall inside the rod's range. For a 5-foot tub alcove that measures 57 to 60 inches, both Moen's and Zenna's curved tension rods fit.
